Cam'ron's return to rap relevance

Harlem native Cam’ron lost rap relevance circa 2002.

Admittedly, the Dipset head honcho did cobble together bits and bobs since his most successful album, Come Home With Me (on which you'll find that decade's club anthem “Hey Ma”). However, nothing released since 2002 was noteworthy. Cam’ron basically lain dormant for 12 years. In the fluffy age of Migos and Macklemore, of introspective rap, of glow stick rap, and, of trap, Cam’ron appeared frozen out – even his trademark pink furs couldn't keep him hot.

Of course, this was all before we heard Cam’ron’s latest offering, “Dipsh*ts”.

Produced by DJ A-Track, “Dipsh*ts” is a summertime banger. Whilst the beat is constructed almost entirely from synths + a basic drum pattern, “Dipsh*ts” still sounds uplifting, exultant, majestic and presidential (to the extent a Harlem rap track can be all those things). Indeed, “Dipsh*ts” also holds up lyrically. Cam’ron is clearly at his best here. Cam’ron manages to competently deliver machine gun rhymes whilst also reclaiming his trademark ‘supa dupa’ flow – long expropriated by Drake and Big Sean in his 12 year absence.
